We are pushing the panic button. ICE has started asking detainees to have family members bring small bags. This is the last step before deportation.

We are asking for as many lawyers as possible to reach out to us at CODE Legal Aid or the Chaldean Community Foundation immediately.

If the lawyers from the Latino, Arab, and other communities can assist, we will be gracious.

The national level stuff is moving, but each detainee still needs individual representation. We are coordinating representation for people.

If you have someone or know someone who is detained, please call Code Legal Aid at 248.543.5214 or the Chaldean Community Foundation at 586.722.7253 with the following information:

1. Name of detainee
2. Date of Birth of detainee
3. Immigration status of detainee 
4. Does he/she have a passport?
5. Has detainee ever signed an order of deportation (Form 407)? Have a date ready!
6. Where he or she is detained right now; is there a deportation date yet? 
7. Convictions and time served; including dates and locations
8. Medical conditions; does he/she need a translator; other special considerations, like children etc. 
9. Alien # (aka the A number)- it will have an A then start with a 0 and is 9 total numbers long. 
10. Does he/she have a lawyer? Name of lawyer.

I’ll be available sporadically in the morning and after 4. PM me with your phone number and/or info and I’ll get back with you. We want to make sure all the detainees are in our database and that they all have attorneys or we’ll try to provide them with one. Everyone is working really hard. So hard.

Below is the law that will protect those men from being delivered to Iraq.

I watched the video with Martin Manna patiently trying to explain this to the families. I understand how upsetting, emotional and traumatizing this can be for them. However, please stop arguing and listen to what you are being told. He is trying to help these men. I am an attorney, I am not an immigration attorney and do not know where to start to help these individuals. But you all need to understand that each and every Individual that has been detained MUST obtain an attorney and file a motion for a CAT claim. The UN has a treaty that the US signed and will abide by. It is called the Convention Against Torture. A motion must be filed on each detainee’s behalf requesting asylum and stating that if they are returned to IRAQ they will face torture and execution. Each detainee must present proof in court as to why that individual will be persecuted and why The Iraqi government will not be able to protect them. Considering Congress’ declaration last week that Christian Genocide exists in Iraq this will not be a difficult burden of proof to offer to the court. These men need to state that they are in fear of their lives if sent back to Iraq. Motions must be filed ASAP!!! They are called CAT Claims. There is a limit per year as to who can get these. But considering what is happening, this is their hope to come out of this without being sent to Iraq. Motions MUST be filed. Instead of yelling at Martin Manna let him help you find the resources you need!!!

ACRL Deeply Disturbed By Recent ICE Raids Against Iraqi Community
In a sweep to continue efforts to deport Iraqi nationals with criminal records, hundreds of people have arrested in Metro Detroit this past weekend. The arrests have taken place in Dearborn, Warren and Sterling Heights and include Chaldeans and Muslims among those arrested. Similar sweeps have taken place across the country.
This follows the national trend, where immigration arrests have risen this year with the election of President Donald Trump, who campaigned on tightening immigration enforcement. In January, the issued an executive order denying federal funds to cities giving sanctuary to illegal immigrants and issued the highly contested travel ban, which is being challenged in multiple districts across the country.
These acts are truly disappointing and disgraceful, particularly as many Iraqis subject to deportation face a significant risk of persecution by foreign terrorist groups upon their removal to Iraq. Many of these individuals have already paid their dues to society due to acts committed decades ago, who are now punished again and being torn apart from their families. 
Our hearts go out to the families affected by these grotesque policies.  The ACRL is available to address any questions and concerns by affected loved ones concerning these raids.
