FYI

To the families of those detained or at-risk of deportation: We have appealed to Governor Snyder to consider pardons for those with State Felonies. It is our understanding that most of those detained have Federal offenses. If a member of your family has been detained (or has a final order of removal) and has a State felony, your attorney should complete a pardon application and deliver it to the Chaldean Community Foundation located at 3601, 15 Mile Road in Sterling Heights no later than noon, Monday June 26. On-staff and volunteer community attorneys will be present at the Foundation this Friday, June 23rd from 10am -4 pm and Saturday, June 24 from 10am – 4pm to provide assistance to those needing help with the application. @chaldeancommunityfoundation @helpiraq @chaldeanamericanchamber @thechaldeannews @wisam_naoum @nathankalasho...

There seems to be some confusion about the status of the ACLU lawsuit and deportations.

On Thursday, the ACLU filed a class action lawsuit in Federal Court seeking to delay or waive deportation proceedings of the Iraqi’s that have been detained.  A hearing is scheduled for next Wednesday, June 21, 2017.  Until then, the US attorney’s office has voluntarily agreed not to deport anyone before Wednesday.  There is NO Court Order issued yet in the ACLU lawsuit or otherwise delaying or waving deportation.  Families of individuals that are held by ICE should continue to work with their attorneys to seek their options through the immigration’s courts.  The Project Justice committee members will continue to monitor the ACLU lawsuit and other developments in this matter, and update the community as necessary.   Burt Kassab Project Justice...

Thanks Wisam Naoum for clearing the air.

To the community: 1. If you are a lawyer representing detainees, you need to get their names and info to us. The ACLU, NILC, and IRAP need this information to form their cases to stop the deportations. You are doing the community and these individuals a disservice by not sharing this information with us. We have worked with the Chaldean Community Foundation and have spent the last 72 hours with families to build this comprehensive list that the national organizations are using. 2. Lawyers, if you have successful pleadings, please send them to us. We have a team of attorneys working around the clock putting together templates and working to connect individuals that don’t have representation with lawyers that can work on this pro bono or at heavily reduced costs. Frankly, we need more of you to step up to the plate with pleadings and services. I can’t stress how much we need you right now. 3. Please share our gofundme to fund the people that need it most. 4. There is some confusion and rumors about the lawsuits. The ACLU case is one of two class action avenues to fight the Trump Administration. The ACLU case will be an emergency stay to buy us more time. NILC and IRAP are pursuing a longer term solution that is highly dependent on current matters before the Supreme Court. The ACLU is hoping to file it tomorrow and the good news is that it will cover all detainees and those that are yet to be detained. What the families need to understand is that they need their own legal representation irrespective...

Good afternoon,

Good afternoon, In case you were wondering about the lack of a message last week, the WMR was on vacation.  International style.  At our wife’s insistence, we took the family and hopped the pond, if you will, and spent a few days in London and a few more days in Paris.  Superbe visite!  Experience formidable!  Saw the sights, many of them anyway, palaces and castles and churches and museums among others.  Had tea with the Queen.  Spent some time wandering the shops and cafes and patisseries and sampling the culinary wares.  We liked London fine, but we loved Paris more.  Our youngest daughter became especially fond of the wonderful French treats known as macaroons.  We estimated that she consumed at least a dozen per day in an attempt to eat her body weight in the tasty confection.  Prior to the trip, neither of those cities was on my personal bucket list to visit, but since my wife is smarter than me (no surprise to those of you who know her,) her decision to take us there was a good one.  As are most of her decisions. Visiting older countries and older cultures did make us realize something.  The United States is only a toddler.  Not only in the sense that we act like a spoiled one from time to time, which we undoubtedly do, but in the sense that we’re only a couple of hundred years old.  After visiting castles and churches that are a couple of thousand years old and walking on the same floors that millions before us had, we gained some appreciation for history.  We also...
